What it is

Term life cover pays a lump sum if you die during the years the policy runs. Its job is simple: to replace your income for the people who rely on it.

Mortgage protection is not family cover

Most home loans legally need mortgage protection. It usually shrinks as the mortgage does and clears the loan, but it pays nothing towards food, childcare or bills.

Check what you already have

Many jobs include death-in-service cover, often a multiple of your salary. It usually ends when you leave the job, so don't count on it for good.

Think in years, not euro

How many years would your family need help, until the youngest finishes school, say, and how much a year? That's the question cover is sized from.

Your next step

Write down what you have: mortgage protection, any cover through work, and the State payments from the last lesson. For a decision about a policy, talk to a regulated adviser.
