Two different jobs

Serious illness cover pays one lump sum if you're diagnosed with an illness on its list. Income protection pays a regular income if illness or injury stops you working.

Serious illness cover

It only pays for the illnesses the policy names, and usually only if you survive a set time after diagnosis, often 7 or 14 days. It doesn't replace your wages month by month.

Income protection

It can pay up to about 75% of your income after a waiting period you choose, like 4, 13, 26 or 52 weeks. Sick pay and social welfare are taken off what it pays.

Mortgage protection won't help here

It pays off the mortgage if you die. It doesn't pay the repayments if you're too sick to work. That's a separate gap.

Your next step

Ask HR what sick pay you'd get and for how long. That tells you how long your family could manage before money got tight.
