What should a 7 month old be doing?

Lumpier food, sitting steady, chained babble, the 7 to 9 month check and what to raise with the PHN.

In short

At 7 months most babies sleep roughly 12 to 15 hours in 24, eat 2 to 3 small meals on top of their milk, sit without support, pass toys hand to hand and babble chains like ba-ba-ba. The 7 to 9 month PHN development check window opens now.

  • Sleep: roughly 12 to 15 hours in 24, usually 2 naps and sometimes a catnap, wake windows about 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • Food: 2 to 3 small meals, moving from smooth to mashed with soft lumps, plus finger foods and iron-rich food every day.
  • Milk: still 500 to 600 ml of formula a day or breastfeeds on demand, with water in sips from a cup at meals.
  • Milestones: sits without support, passes objects hand to hand, rolls to travel, chained babble, looks for dropped toys.
  • Ireland: no vaccines at 7 months. The 7 to 9 month PHN development check is the next routine appointment.

A 7 month old should be sitting without support, grabbing food off the spoon, babbling strings of sounds and sleeping roughly 12 to 15 hours in 24. Weaning moves up a gear this month, and the first routine check since the early months arrives with it.

The ranges below are consistent with HSE and WHO guidance. They are wide on purpose, and a healthy 7 month old can sit anywhere inside them.

How much should a 7 month old sleep?

Roughly 12 to 15 hours in 24, usually 2 proper naps and sometimes a short catnap, with wake windows of about 2.5 to 3 hours. Many 7 month olds do a long stretch at night, and plenty still wake for a feed. Both are normal.

A 7 month old baby sleep schedule usually settles around a morning nap and a lunchtime nap, with the catnap fading. Teething, a cold or practising sitting in the cot can throw a week of nights. If naps have gone short, check the wake windows chart first, and if the night wakes are the bigger question, our guide to when babies sleep through the night has the honest ranges.

What should a 7 month old eat?

By 7 months most babies are on 2 to 3 small meals a day alongside their milk. The texture moves on now: from smooth purees to mashed food with soft lumps, plus finger foods like soft-cooked vegetable batons, banana and toast fingers. Lumps teach chewing, and chewing is a skill worth practising early, so a 7 month old baby food chart is less about new foods and more about new textures of the same good foods.

Keep iron-rich food coming every day: well-cooked minced meat, lentils, beans, eggs and iron-fortified baby cereal. Milk is still 500 to 600 ml of formula a day or breastfeeds on demand, and water comes in sips from a cup with meals. No honey before 12 months, no added salt or sugar and no whole nuts. The starting solids guide covers the progression, and the HSE's weaning pages are the official reference.

How often should a 7 month old feed?

Most 7 month olds have 3 to 5 milk feeds in 24 hours plus their 2 to 3 meals. A common shape is milk first thing, milk after each nap and milk at bedtime, with breakfast and lunch slotted about an hour after the morning feeds. Breastfed babies may still feed more often, especially in the evening, and that is fine.

If meals are going well, you may notice one daytime bottle quietly shrinking. Let it, as long as the day's milk total stays around the 500 to 600 ml mark. Milk is still doing the heavy lifting for nutrition at 7 months.

What milestones should a 7 month old have?

The 7 month old baby milestones to look for:

Crawling, pulling to stand and waving usually come in the next couple of months. Some babies skip crawling entirely and bum shuffle instead, which is a style, not a problem. The communication development guide covers what the babble turns into next.

What is a normal day with a 7 month old?

A 7 month old baby feeding schedule and sleep schedule often looks something like this.

Meals will be smeared, dropped and occasionally worn as a hat. That is learning, not waste. Look at the week, not the tray.

What happens at the 7 to 9 month PHN check?

The 7 to 9 month development check is the next routine appointment, and for many babies it lands somewhere in this window. The PHN looks at sitting, hand use, babbling, hearing responses and vision, weighs the baby and talks through how weaning and sleep are going. It is also your slot: bring the questions that have been circling at 3am.

If you have not been offered an appointment by the end of this window, ring your local health centre and ask when it is due. There are no vaccines at 7 months; the next ones are at 12 and 13 months. Our guide to PHN visits in Ireland covers every check in the first year, and questions to ask the PHN is worth a skim the night before. The HSE's 6 to 12 month checks page is the official version.

What is not normal at 7 months?

Worth ringing the PHN or GP about, rather than waiting for the check:

How do I know if my 7 month old is on track?

Compare your baby against the ranges above over a week, not a day. Two refused dinners mean nothing. A fortnight where the milk keeps dropping, or the babble never arrives, is a pattern worth raising, and the 7 to 9 month check is the natural place to raise it. Lullagram logs meals, milk, sleep and milestones in a tap and turns a week of logging into the averages and reports the PHN asks about. It is free to try on Android, iPhone and web.

Every baby has their own timetable. This is a guide, not medical advice. If you are worried, ask your PHN or GP.
