What should a 9 month old be doing?

On the move, pulling to stand, three meals and a pincer grip, the 9 month check and what to raise with the PHN.

In short

At 9 months most babies sleep roughly 12 to 14 hours in 24, eat 3 meals plus finger foods, move by crawling or shuffling, pull to stand and pick crumbs up with a pincer grip. The 7 to 9 month PHN development check should have happened or be booked by now.

  • Sleep: roughly 12 to 14 hours in 24, usually 2 naps, wake windows about 3 to 3.5 hours.
  • Food: 3 meals with minced, chopped and finger foods, iron-rich food every day, water from a cup at meals.
  • Milk: around 500 to 600 ml of formula a day or breastfeeds on demand, easing as meals grow.
  • Milestones: crawls or bum shuffles, pulls to stand, pincer grip, mama and dada starting to stick, understands no.
  • Ireland: no vaccines at 9 months. The next ones are at 12 and 13 months. Chase the development check if it has not happened.

A 9 month old should be on the move in some fashion, pulling up on the furniture, eating three meals with their fingers and saying ma-ma and da-da that are starting to land on the right people. The kitchen floor is about to become an obstacle course.

The ranges below are consistent with HSE and WHO guidance. They are wide on purpose, and a healthy 9 month old can sit anywhere inside them.

How much should a 9 month old sleep?

Roughly 12 to 14 hours in 24, usually a long night stretch and 2 naps, with wake windows of about 3 to 3.5 hours. Many 9 month olds sleep 10 to 12 hours at night, some with a feed still in there, and the naps hold at a morning one and a lunchtime one.

Pulling to stand is this month's cot hobby, including at 4am, and separation anxiety can still colour bedtimes. Keep the routine identical and the visits boring. The wake windows chart has the timing, and our guide to when babies sleep through the night has the honest ranges if the nights are still broken.

What should a 9 month old eat?

By 9 months food is proper food: 3 meals a day of minced, chopped and mashed family-style dishes plus finger foods at every meal. The pincer grip turns eating into a precision sport, so peas, soft pasta and grated cheese get picked off the tray one by one. Keep iron-rich food coming daily and offer water from a cup with meals.

Milk is still around 500 to 600 ml of formula a day or breastfeeds on demand, usually 3 feeds, and it eases gradually as meals do more of the work. Cow's milk stays off the menu as a drink until 12 months, though it is fine in cooking. No honey before 12 months, no added salt or sugar and nothing small, hard and round. The starting solids guide and the HSE's weaning pages cover the detail.

What are good breakfast ideas for a 9 month old?

The 9 month old breakfast rotation does not need to be clever, it needs to be repeatable at 7am:

Skip added salt and sugar, and let the same few breakfasts repeat. Familiar food gets eaten.

What milestones should a 9 month old have?

The 9 month old baby milestones to look for:

First steps are usually months away yet, anywhere from 10 to 18 months. The communication guide covers the road from babble to first words.

What is a normal day with a 9 month old?

A 9 month old baby schedule often looks something like this.

If the day drifts, anchor the wake time and the meals and let the naps find their own level.

What happens at the 9 month check if it has not happened yet?

The 7 to 9 month development check covers sitting and movement, hand use and the pincer grip, babbling, hearing responses, vision and weight, plus a proper chat about feeding and sleep. If it has not happened and nothing is booked, ring your local health centre and ask when it is due. It is a check worth having, and chasing it is normal, not fussy.

There are no vaccines at 9 months. The next ones are the 12 and 13 month visits at the GP, and the Irish vaccine schedule guide explains what each one covers. The free vaccine calculator turns your baby's date of birth into the actual dates. Our PHN visits guide covers the checks themselves.

What is not normal at 9 months?

Worth ringing the PHN or GP about, rather than waiting to be seen:

How do I know if my 9 month old is on track?

Compare your baby against the ranges above over a week, not a day. A dinner on the floor and a 4am standing session is just 9 months. A fortnight where the feeds keep shrinking, the babble goes quiet or a skill disappears is a pattern worth a phone call. Lullagram logs meals, milk, sleep and milestones in a tap and turns a week of logging into the averages and printable reports the PHN asks about. It is free to try on Android, iPhone and web.

Every baby has their own timetable. This is a guide, not medical advice. If you are worried, ask your PHN or GP.
