Gaps happen to parents

Staying home, a career break or time between jobs can leave years with no PRSI on your record. Gaps can mean a smaller State pension later.

Credits first

If you're getting certain social welfare payments, or signing on for credits, the weeks are credited to your record for you. Ask your Intreo office if you're not sure.

Voluntary contributions

If you've stopped paying PRSI and you're not getting credits, you can choose to pay voluntary contributions. They count towards pensions, though not towards short-term benefits like Maternity Benefit.

There's a time limit

Apply within 60 months of the end of the last tax year you paid PRSI or got a credit. Former employees usually pay 6.6% of the previous year's income, at least €500. The self-employed pay €650.

Your next step

Request a Contribution Statement on MyWelfare.ie and look for empty years. If you find one, ask the Department of Social Protection what you can still do about it.
