Why parents need one

A broken boiler, a car repair or a few weeks off sick costs more with a baby in the house. A cushion stops a bad week from becoming a loan.

How much

A common aim is about three months of essential bills: rent or mortgage, food, energy and childcare. Start with one month. Any amount is better than none.

Where

Somewhere you can reach in a day or two but won't spend by accident: a separate savings account or the credit union, not your current account.

It's protected

Deposits in banks, building societies and credit unions authorised by the Central Bank are protected up to €100,000 per person per institution by the Deposit Guarantee Scheme.

Make it automatic

Set up a standing order for the day after payday, even €20. Money that moves before you see it gets saved.
