€140 a month, every month

Child Benefit lands on the first Tuesday of each month for every child under 16, whatever your income. It's the easiest money in the house to give a job.

Give it a job

Many parents send it straight to a separate account for the baby's costs: nappies, formula, clothes, childcare. Then you can see exactly what the baby costs.

List the monthly costs

Write down everything that leaves your account in a month, then everything that comes in. Most families find one or two subscriptions or direct debits they'd forgotten.

Leave costs a lot

Maternity Benefit is €299 a week in 2026 and €309 from January 2027. If that's less than your pay, plan for the gap months before your leave starts.
