Free baby stuff in Ireland: baby boxes, events and clubs
The events, clubs and schemes Irish parents pass around in WhatsApp groups, and what the freebies really cost.
Babies are expensive. Not surprising expensive, more like relentless expensive. So it is no shock that Irish parents have a proud tradition of never turning down free stuff, and the good news is there's a genuine circuit of free baby stuff in Ireland if you know where to look. One rule before we start: offers rotate constantly. What was free last month may be gone this month, so treat everything below as a category to watch, not a promise, and check the retailer's site or app for current dates.
Supermarket baby events
Aldi and Lidl run baby and toddler events several times a year, with deep discounts on nappies, wipes and gear. These are the ones that cause actual queues. The good stuff goes in the first days, sometimes the first hours, so if you see one announced, don't dawdle.
Tesco has run baby clubs and box giveaways alongside its Clubcard scheme, and parents regularly report picking up baby boxes for attending baby events or webinars. The details change year to year, which is exactly why the WhatsApp groups exist.
Baby clubs worth joining
Supermarket and pharmacy baby clubs are usually worth the two minutes it takes to sign up. Boots Parenting Club is the best-known pharmacy one, with points on baby purchases and occasional freebies for members.
Formula-brand baby clubs also exist, and they do send samples and coupons. One honest note here: if you're planning to breastfeed, be aware that these clubs exist to market formula. That's their whole job. Join with eyes open, or skip them entirely.
Sample bags and welcome packs
Maternity hospitals and some pharmacies hand out sample bags with nappy, wipe and cream samples, usually somewhere between the booking visit and going home with the baby. Registration packs in the Emma's Diary style offer welcome packs of goodies for signing up, and there's usually one or two of these doing the rounds at any given time.
The catch: your email is the price
Almost every freebie above is a trade. You get samples, they get your email address and a marketing profile of your household. That's the deal, and it's fine as long as you know you're making it.
The practical tip that saves your sanity: make a dedicated free email address just for baby signups. The spam has somewhere to live, the vouchers still arrive, and your actual inbox stays yours.
Free from the State, the bits people forget
The biggest freebies of all don't come with a loyalty card. Maternity care in the public system is free under the Maternity and Infant Care Scheme. GP visits are free for children under 8. Child Benefit is a monthly payment per child, no means test. PHN visits, the heel prick test and childhood vaccines are all free too.

Second-hand is the real jackpot
Here's the honest truth about baby gear: most of it gets used for about four months. Irish parents pass on barely-used everything, and local parent groups, charity shops and marketplaces are full of once-worn babygros, untouched sterilisers and bouncers that bounced maybe twice.
One safety rule, and it's non-negotiable: always buy the car seat new or from someone you trust completely. A seat that has been in a crash can look absolutely fine and not be. Everything else, second-hand away.
